The officers without a warning broke down Matthews's door, slammed him facedown and striked him on his face and head. The officers' warrant, however, was for a different unit of the same building - a mistake the officers should have recognized. During the arrest, Matthews complied with the officers' request peacefully. The officers then placed 5 tight pairs of handcuffs on Matthews. Matthews experienced immense pain from the tightness of the handcuffs and requested that they be loosened, but the officers ignored the request. Officers could have intervened, but they did not. \nUpon returning home after being released, Matthews discovered that much of his properties at his home was damaged by the officers. Matthews also lost consciousness due to the injury sustained during the arrest and had to receive emergency medical care. Doctors diagnosed him with Rhabdomyolysis and advised him that if he was one hour late, he would likely have passed away. Besides Rhabdomyolysis, Matthews suffered from a permanent stomach injury from being slammed down to the ground and bruises on multiple parts of his body. The excessively tight handcuffs also led to permanent nerve damage that inflicts chronic numbness, tingling, swelling, and pain on Matthews's hands and wrists. As a result of these injuries, Matthews was forced to resign from his job.
