Ferera, who is African American, had hired a hairstylist to style his hair at home. When she demanded double what they had agreed on, she became violent, throwing things on his shelves, banging on his front door with a brick, and threatening Ferera with the brick. When the eight NYPD officers arrived at Ferera's house, Ferera was retrieving his dog, which had gotten out during the commotion. Ferera repeatedly instructed the officers not to follow him into his home, but six of the officers did, though they did not have a warrant to do so. One officer, with badge number 5139 (Harold Gates), pointed his gun at Ferera and told him to \"put the dog away\" despite the fact the dog was not dangerous. None of the other officers intervened. The officers accused Ferera of punching the hair stylist in the face, then arrested him without reading him his Miranda rights. Ferera's 83-year-old grandmother, who lives with him, had to watch officers forcibly enter Ferera's home and threaten him with a gun. Ferera was in police custody for two days until his arraignment. After several court appearances, all charges against Ferera were dismissed on or about December 6, 2023.
