During the protest, NYPD Officers suddenly, unprovoked, and without warning, assaulted and arrested protesters. Plaintiff witnessed and recorded with his phone Defendant Sheppard shove a woman to the ground. Plaintiff said \"hey!\" in response but did not otherwise act. Defendant Sheppard immediately turned to Plaintiff and ordered to have him arrested. Defendant Gamble and others attacked Plaintiff from behind, struck his head with a baton, tackled him to the ground injuring his wrist and forehead and cracking his phone screen. Defendants forcefully pressed a knee or elbow into Plaintiff's left shoulder and pressed his face into the ground. Defendants tightly handcuffed him with zip ties that were so tight Plaintiff lost the feeling in his hands. Plaintiff was detained for six hours. Defendants ignored his repeated requests for medical attention or request for a face mask to protect against Covid-19, as his had been knocked off during Defendants assault and arrest of him. Plaintiff was released with summons for violating the New York City curfew despite police giving no order to disperse at the protest. The summons was subsequently dismissed without explanation on September 9, 2020.","documents":[{"url":"https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nyed.463696/gov.uscourts.nyed.463696.24.0.pdf","type":"complaint"}],"url":"https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/59882099/lopez-v-gamble/"},{"name":"Strudwick, Destiny, et al. vs City of Ny, et al.","start_date":"2021-03-25","disposition_date":"2022-07-22","payout_amount":99000,"disposition":"Settlement","docket":"21CV02236","court":"U.S. District Court - Eastern District NY","summary":"On June 4, 2020, Plaintiffs were participating in lawful protests related to the death of George Floyd. The protest continued in front of a roadblock erected by the NYPD for several minutes. As the Plaintiffs turned to leave the area, NYPD officers including the defendants charged into the protesters and began using force against them. The Plaintiffs were separated from each other as they attempted to avoid the officers’ use of force against them. As she was looking for others, one of the defendant officers approached Plaintiff Strudwick aggressively, and tackled her to the ground. Other officers joined the assault. They applied force to Plaintiff Strudwick about her body, as she lied on the ground. P.O. Sheppard tased Plaintiff Strudwick. During the whole process, Plaintiff Strudwick did not resist arrest or pose a risk to any officer’s safety. Plaintiff Strudwick was arrested and was taken to the emergency room for treatment of her injuries. The charges alleged in the Summons issued to Plaintiff Strudwick were later dismissed.\n\nPlaintiff Geurts experienced the same thing. She lied on the ground face first surrendering herself to avoid the offices using force against her. The officers nevertheless grabbed Plaintiff Geurts forcibly by the arm, applied force to her back using their knees and other body parts, and pushed her face first into the ground. Plaintiff Geurts did not resist arrest or pose a risk to any officer’s safety. Plaintiff Geurts was arrested and placed in handcuffs that were unnecessarily tight, in a manner designed to cause pain. She requested multiple times for the officers to loosen her handcuffs as they were causing her pain but defendant officers only tightened her handcuffs further. Defendant officers also made sexually suggestive remarks regarding Plaintiff Geurts while she was in their custody. The charges alleged in the Summons issued to Plaintiff Geurts were later dismissed.","documents":[{"url":"https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nyed.463134/gov.uscourts.nyed.463134.18.0.pdf","type":"complaint"}],"url":"https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/59847291/strudwick-v-the-city-of-new-york/"}],"discipline":[{"disposition_date":"2022-04-09","case_no":"2021-23654","recommendation":"Other","allegations":[{"desc":"Failed to prepare required reports."}]}],"documents":[{"url":"https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/21028820-sheppard-39795a65f3d34e53da77919e27b16ca55e774896","type":"brady-giglio"},{"url":"https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/22085547-seh_945351","type":"employment-history"}],"image":"https://www.50-a.org/images/officer/6PYF-tarik-sheppard.jpg","socials":[{"url":"https://www.linkedin.com/in/tarik-sheppard-861357135","type":"linkedin"}],"news":[{"url":"https://nypost.com/2026/06/25/top-eric-adams-adviser-frank-carone-arrested-ex-nypd-officials-raided-in-sweeping-corruption-probes-sources/","title":"Top Eric Adams adviser Frank Carone arrested, ex-NYPD officials raided in sweeping corruption probes: sources","source":"New York Post","date":"2026-06-25"},{"url":"https://www.politico.com/news/2025/07/16/former-nypd-chief-accuses-top-city-officials-including-the-mayor-of-overseeing-coordinated-criminal-conspiracy-in-lawsuit-00455791","title":"Adams, top aides ran 'coordinated criminal conspiracy' at NYPD, former interim commish alleges","source":"Politico","date":"2025-07-16"},{"url":"https://www.thecity.nyc/2025/06/03/nypd-excessive-force-discipline-george-floyd-protests/","title":"Almost Every NYPD Cop Charged with Excessive Force During the George Floyd Protests Escaped Serious Punishment","source":"The City","date":"2025-06-03"},{"url":"https://nypost.com/2024/12/28/us-news/top-nypd-information-chief-tarik-sheppard-has-been-demoted/","title":"Hot-headed NYPD deputy commissioner — who called Post reporter a 'f-king scumbag' — has been demoted: sources","source":"New York Post","date":"2024-12-28"},{"url":"https://www.propublica.org/article/nypd-commissioner-edward-caban-police-discipline-retention-eric-adams","title":"New Yorkers Were Choked, Beaten and Tased by NYPD Officers.
