Plaintiff is a law enforcement officer in Massachusetts, and mentioned this upon entering the precinct. Defendant Slavin contested the veracity of plaintiff's law enforcement status, and directed another officer to tightly handcuff and arrest plaintiff for impersonating a law enforcement officer. After being held for over two hours, once defendant Slavin confirmed plaintiff's identity, he was released. Plaintiff was never formally charged.","documents":[{"url":"https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysd.471914/gov.uscourts.nysd.471914.19.0.pdf","type":"complaint"}],"url":"https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/6148746/bloise-freyre-v-city-of-new-york/"},{"name":"Bento, Michael vs City of New York, et al.","start_date":"2016-02-02","disposition_date":"2017-02-28","payout_amount":25000,"disposition":"Settlement","docket":"150519/2016","court":"Supreme Court - New York","officer_name":"Slavin, James","summary":"On August 17, 2015, the plaintiff was lawfully participating in a protest, when Sergeant Slavin violently grabbed a female protestor and forcefully brought her down to the ground. The plaintiff, along with other protestors, yelled “Shame” and “who do you work for,\" after which Slavin aggressively approached the plaintiff and grabbed him in a headlock. Slavin then took the plaintiff down to the ground in a chokehold on the street and placed a knee on the plaintiff’s body, later handcuffing and arresting him. The plaintiff was then transported to the 17th precinct and was held in a cell for over two hours, held against his will under full force of arms. Police Offie Byran DeVita issued a summons, falsely accusing the plaintiff of disorderly conduct for obstructing vehicular traffic, which was later approved by Slavin. All charges against the plaintiff were later dismissed. The plaintiff was thus falsely imprisoned without cause or any reasonable grounds; the plaintiff was wholly innocent of all criminal charges and did not contribute in any way to the false arrest and imprisonment. The plaintiff was lawfully at the protest, exercising his constitutional right freedom of speech and his right to assemble ad associate. The plaintiff consequently suffered great emotional and psychological harm, as well as loss of work and freedom. Slavin and/or DeVita failed to intervene to stop the illegal conduct.","documents":[{"url":"https://iapps.courts.state.ny.us/nyscef/ViewDocument?docIndex=4ed0IRa0D37Eiv6/S6/VJQ==","type":"complaint"}]},{"name":"Rivera, Richie, et al. vs City of New York, et al.","start_date":"2014-09-16","disposition_date":"2015-10-26","payout_amount":37000,"disposition":"Settlement","docket":"14CV05220","court":"U.S. District Court - Eastern District NY","officer_name":"Slavin, James","summary":"On October 26, 2013, Plaintiffs Richie, Carmen, and Dennis Rivera, and Enrique Castillo were all involved in an act of police excessive force in their apartment complex to effect a false arrest after an unlawful stop and search by numerous NYPD police officers in King's County.
