City of New York et al","court":"U.S. District Court - Eastern District NY","payout_amount":24000,"disposition":"Settlement","summary":"At about 8pm, plaintiffs were lawfully inside Cofield's bedroom when police officers blasted open the door leading into the apartment with what appeared to be a gun shot. Upon blasting the door open, said POs rushed into Cofield's apt, pointed their guns at Cofield and ordered Cofield to turn around and raise up his hands. Although he obeyed, Cofield was handcuffed in the back and was forcefully and violently thrown to the ground and ordered to lie face down. While Cofield was lying face down on the ground, one of the police officers firmly pressed one leg on his back and stomped and kicked Cofield in the back several times. The Police officers dragged Cofield from his children's room to the kitchen area of his apartment and continued to stomp and kick him in the back while he was lying face down on the ground. Police officers ransacked the searched Cofield's apt and yelled \"where are the dogs and the drugs\". While Cofield was still handcuffed, the police officers violently pushed and shoved him out of his apartment, paraded him along the street in the presence and full view of on-lookers and shoved him into a police patrol vehicle wherein he was detained for over one hour. Police officers also subjected Davis to the same type of treatment. Davis was handcuffed in the back and forced to lie face down on the bed. At approx. 10:30PM. after completely ransacking Cofield's apartment and damaging Cofield's household furniture, the POs claimed that they had completed their warranted search of the apartment. The police officers did not find any crack cocaine or its paraphernalia, illegal US currency, or any illegal substance on the plaintiffs or from Cofield's apartment.","documents":[{"url":"https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/4918497-Cofield-et-al-v-City-of-New-York-et-al"}],"docket":"03CV00008","officer_name":"Timothy M.
