Without probable cause, reasonable suspicion, a valid search warrant, or legal justification, and due to her race and ethnicity, Plaintiff was unlawfully stopped, detained, battered, assaulted, seized, searched, and falsely arrested by the Defendant officers. A week prior, Defendant Kashinsky investigated a complaint by Plaintiff's former significant other, contacted Plaintiff, and illegally demanded her voluntary surrender. Plaintiff denied the allegations. Defendant officers falsely accused Plaintiff of assault without probable cause, aggressively seized her, and applied overly tight handcuffs despite being informed of her significant pain. Officers present but not actively participating in the misconduct failed to intervene. Following the arrest, Plaintiff was taken to the NYPD 66th Precinct, where she was scanned and searched without being Mirandized. She was then transported to Central Booking against her will and illegally detained until her release on January 15, 2021. All baseless charges were dismissed in Plaintiff's favor on March 15, 2021. As a result, Plaintiff suffered damages.","documents":[{"url":"https://iapps.courts.state.ny.us/nyscef/ViewDocument?docIndex=gKNYG0Q0Opw1MXyaUkXLEw==","type":"complaint"}]},{"name":"Nathaniel, Brandon, et al. vs City of New York, et al.","start_date":"2016-01-21","disposition_date":"2017-11-06","payout_amount":0,"disposition":"Zero Disposition","docket":"16CV00256","court":"U.S. District Court - Eastern District NY","officer_name":"Coyle, John R.","summary":"On November 14, 2014, plaintiffs Brandon Nathaniel and Hassan Sheftall, accompanied by Sheftall's 2-year-old son, were traveling in a vehicle driven by Nathaniel in Brooklyn. Plaintiffs are African American. POs John Does 1–3, not in uniform and driving in an unmarked patrol car, began following plaintiffs' vehicle (though they were not responding to any dispatched call). The officers turned on their signal lights to stop plaintiffs' vehicle, stopped their car, and approached plaintiffs' car with guns drawn, asking plaintiffs to produce ID. Plaintiffs complied, and the officers ordered them to get out of their vehicle. The officers forced them against the vehicle and forcibly patted them down, including their genital areas. The officers also searched their trunk. The officers then left without providing any explanation for why plaintiffs were stopped and searched. On February 2, 2015, Nathaniel and another individual were walking in Brooklyn. POs John Coyle, Kevin Deleon, Salvatore Melore, and John Doe 7 were not in uniform and traveling in an unmarked vehicle. They started traveling against traffic, came up against plaintiffs, and the officers rapidly exited their vehicle. They forced plaintiff to stop, forcibly patted him down, including his genital area, asking him if he had any weapons and demanding that he produce ID. Plaintiff complied, and the officers did a computer check for any warrants on plaintiff. Finding no warrants, the officers left without providing any explanation for the stop and search. On February 26, 2015, Nathaniel and three other individuals were sitting in his parked car near his apartment building, waiting for a food delivery. PO John Does 8–9, not in uniform and traveling in an unmarked vehicle, approached plaintiff's parked car, demanded that plaintiff produce ID, and asked if they had any contraband. They said no, and a second unmarked vehicle arrived with PO John Does 10–11. The officers ordered plaintiff and the other occupants to exit the vehicle, forcibly patted him down, and forced him against his car. Despite plaintiff denying that he had any contraband and warning that he had a recent surgical wound on his back, PO Doe 8 continued to search him in an aggressive manner. Plaintiff's vehicle was searched, including the glove compartment and trunk. The occupants of the vehicle were forced to stand in the rain for 20 minutes.","documents":[{"url":"https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/4923054-Nathaniel-et-al-v-City-of-New-York-et-al"},{"url":"https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nyed.380356.15.0.pdf","type":"complaint"}],"url":"https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/4325166/nathaniel-v-city-of-new-york/"},{"name":"Arroyo, Roberto vs City of New York, et al.","start_date":"2015-02-23","disposition_date":"2018-03-13","payout_amount":45000,"disposition":"Settlement","docket":"15CV00917","court":"U.S. District Court - Eastern District NY","officer_name":"Coyle, John R.","summary":"Defendants Medina and Perez approached plaintiff and told him that he was seen drinking in front of a building.
