They were indicted and incarcerated on Rikers Island for five years defending this case. All the alleged testimony against them proved to be false at trial, and it came to light that exculpatory evidence had been discovered soon after the murder. Nonetheless, in August 2014 the matter was set for trial. During jury selection, assistant district attorney Karen Ross turned over material that had been in their possession since the case's inception, and the judge declared a mistrial. The crucial evidence was a ballistic report showing that the murder weapon had been used two days earlier in a different shooting by another individual, Shameik Corbett. The matter was finally scheduled for trial a year later in fall of 2015. At this time, the same DA revealed that decedent's phone had been found in Corbett's possession, and this had been known to the police at the time of plaintiffs' arrests. At trial there was only one eyewitness, and she was unable to make any identifications. The judge dismissed the case against one plaintiff, and the other was acquitted by the jury.
