The defendants illegally obtained a search warrant by supplying false statements, without performing a proper investigation beforehand (a gross deviation from standard police procedure), and without probable cause or reasonable suspicion that Ms. Veras engaged in any criminal activity. The defendants stormed into Ms. Veras’ bedroom, where she was completely naked, pointed a gun at her head, and threatened to shoot her. The defendants refused to let her get dressed or cover her private areas and proceeded to rear handcuff her aggressively and tightly, causing permanent physical injury. Ms. Veras was paraded naked across the apartment to another room, was illegally interrogated about whether she had anything to hide, and was threatened with the removal of her children, including the one she was pregnant with, if she did not cooperate.\n\nThroughout the incident, Ms. Veras’ one-year-old child cried persistently, but the defendants refused to let Ms. Veras calm the child. Ms. Veras repeatedly asked to cover herself and for medical attention due to injuries from the handcuffs, but her requests were denied each time. After thirty minutes of being naked and handcuffed, Ms. Veras was finally allowed to get dressed. However, half an hour later, the named defendants directed another officer, Jane Doe 1, to strip and cavity search Ms. Veras in a doorless bathroom, fully visible to the defendants. Despite finding nothing on Ms. Veras or in the apartment, she was arrested and taken to the precinct and later to Central Booking, where she was strip and cavity searched again. She was also denied medical attention for her wrists, her pregnancy, and for her ankles after a bench collapsed under her. Ms. Veras was formally charged with four crimes, even though she was never in actual, constructive, or statutory possession of any illegal drugs or weapons. The charges were filed because the named defendants knowingly and intentionally made false statements to prosecutors, claiming they had seen her with and/or found illegal contraband on her.","documents":[{"url":"https://iapps.courts.state.ny.us/nyscef/ViewDocument?docIndex=ioMA0mA2dH0gspigA61SYA==","type":"complaint"}]},{"name":"Jones, Ralph vs City of New York, et al.","start_date":"2018-02-22","disposition_date":"2019-01-18","payout_amount":22500,"disposition":"Settlement","docket":"021958/2018E","court":"Supreme Court - Bronx","officer_name":"Rodriguez, Jeremy","summary":"On March 18, 2017, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Ralph Jones was lawfully present in the vicinity of Bathgate Avenue and East Tremont Avenue in the Bronx when NYPD officers, including Officers Jeremy Rodriguez and Josue Marcelin, approached him without any legal justification.
