Jacobs learned from a friend that there had been a shooting and the officers were gathered to search for the perpetrator. While speaking to the officers, Jacobs' aunt was insulted by one of the officers. Jacobs recognized this and attempted to get the officers to address his aunt with respect. The officer responded by insulting Jacobs. After some back and forth, the officer pushed Jacobs in the chest. Jacobs nearly fell down. The officer, now joined by his fellow officers, then preceded to push Jacobs twice more until Jacobs was on the ground. Once on the ground, the officers punched, kicked, and stomped Jacobs repeatedly. After this sustained attack, the officers took Jacobs to the police precinct, but after realizing the significance of his injuries, the officers took Jacobs to Lincoln hospital. Jacobs was charged with several crimes and had to spend nearly two days in custody. All charges were dismissed on January 4, 2021. The attack left Jacobs in physical, emotional, and psychological pain that required counseling at the NY Psychotherapy and Counseling Center. Moreover, Jacobs was fired from his job as a result of the attack and struggled to find employment for nearly eight months. The only officer specifically named in the complaint is Officer Maldonado.
