Case # 20CV06414, U.S. District Court - Eastern District NY, December 22, 2020, ended January 11, 2024
$17,500 Settlement
Complaint
Description: On September 30, 2017, Defendants PO Mak, PO Harkins, PO Surko, and Lt. Bardash used excessive force and unlawfully arrested the Plaintiff. The Defendants seized and searched the Plaintiff's bag that was on the porch and denied her pleas for it back. PO Harkins and/or PO Mak then grabbed the Plaintiff and slammed her to the ground. PO Harkins or PO Mak placed his knee on the Plaintiff's face and called her a "bitch." Then, PO Mak excessively tightened handcuffs onto the Plaintiff. To cover up their illegal actions, PO Mak falsely told the Richmond County DAO that the Plaintiff had committed various crimes. Fortunately, all claims were eventually dismissed in her favor.

Santos, Ada vs City of New York, et al.
Case # 19CV01991, U.S. District Court - Eastern District NY, June 19, 2019, ended April 14, 2020
Zero Disposition
Complaint
Description: On January 13, 2017 at around 4pm, Ms. Santos, a Latina, was inside her apartment in Richmond County when six NYPD officers accosted her and accused her of breaking her building super's window. She and her super had ongoing disputes over building maintenance, and the officers had reason to know that the super was not a reliable complaining witness. Further, officers refused to review surveillance footage that would have cleared up the situation, but instead arrested Ms. Santos and held her in custody for twenty hours.
