On December 21, 2016, at approximately 9:54 p.m., Sgt. Gabriel Cuevas and PO Umar Khitab were on patrol after receiving a report of a robbery. Sgt. Cuevas and PO Khitab were both dressed in plainclothes and assigned to an unmarked police vehicle. At the intersection of Utica Avenue and Lincoln Place, in Brooklyn, Sgt.
