Description: On March 26, 2023 Plaintiff was shot and nearly killed by NYPD Officers Derek Bernard and Nicholas Trupia in front of his family's apartment building in the Bronx. Plaintiff has schizophrenia and was visiting family when his father became concerned and called 311, explaining to the operator his son needed help because of his mental health crisis. Defendants Officer Bernard and Trupia arrived at the scene, and because they did not speak Spanish, they were unable to effectively communicate with Plaintiff or his father.
