Complaint
Description: On August 5, 2013, plaintiff Roberto Rivera was a detainee at Rikers Island prison when a fight broke out involving nearly 40 inmates. Plaintiff was stabbed in the eye with a broken broom handle and blineded, and cut on the chin and back of hte head with a knife-like instrument. Defendant corrections officers allowed the fight to continue for approximately one hour, at which point the prisoners calle a truce to allow those near death, including plaintiff, to seek medical attention, and then resumed the fight for nearly 30 more minutes before defendants intervened, despite inmates banginng on the safety glass for help. The defendants were slow to provide medical help to plaintiff, contributing to his injuries.
