Description: On July 27, 2022, Plaintiff Ying Zhu, an Asian American female, was at her place of work in a jewelry store. Plaintiff had limited understanding of English and spoke Mandarin at work. Defendant officers approached plaintiff without legal justification to attempt to sell an item of jewelry using deceptive means. Plaintiff went to print out a document requiring a signature and oath indicating the jewelry was not stolen. Before plaintiff could return upstairs, officers stopped, detained, and falsely accused plaintiff of illegally purchasing an item of stolen jewelry.
